The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Columbus, Ohio, belongs to the Eastern Orthodox faith. The Cathedral is built in the traditional Byzantine style of architecture, which dates back to the sixth century, A.D. The central shape reflects a Greek-style cross, whose arms are of equal length.

ARCHITECTURAL SYMBOLISM

Every architectural element of the cathedral has a special meaning and purpose. It is the embodiment of the Orthodox heritage and it serves as a constant reminder of our living Orthodox tradition. As you journey through the architecture and art of the Cathedral, the history of the orthodox faith comes alive and the relationship that exists between God and man is revealed.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The central dome

is where the arms of the cross meet, featuring Christ and the patriarchs.

The four corner columns

depict the pillars of our faith, the four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The stained glass windows

depict the Saints and scenes of Christ like his birth, baptism, and resurrection.

The mosaic icons

depict the disciples and patriarchs, Christ, angels, and the nativity.

The altar half-dome

features the Virgin Mary with the Christ child, surrounded by the 12 apostles.

BYZANTINE MOSAICS

Crafted by an Italian artisan from nearly five million pieces of Venetian glass, marble, and gold, they are a remarkable example of sacred art and craftsmanship.

Throughout the Cathedral, mosaics bring the stories and symbolism of the Orthodox faith to life.
